Memory's Loose Ends

Reclaimed fabric and metal piercings, 10" × 24"

This multifunctional knitwear piece, which can be worn as a top, skirt, or dress, embodies a raw and tactile interplay between memory, material, and form. Crafted from reclaimed fabric through a fusion of machine and hand knitting, its distressed, open-knit structure evokes a sense of unraveling and impermanence. The incorporation of metal piercings disrupts the soft, woven surface, symbolizing both fragmentation and an attempt to hold together something fleeting. The adaptability of the piece challenges traditional fashion constructs, allowing the wearer to reshape its identity—mirroring the artist’s own complex relationship with memory and selfhood.

As part of an ongoing series exploring the artist’s unique experience of memory, this work grapples with the absence of emotional connection to the past. The artist’s lived experience is untethered to a personal history or sense memory, existing in an eternal present.

The distressed, ephemeral quality of the knit serves as a poignant metaphor for their experience, while the act of reclaiming and reconstructing fabric suggests an unconscious longing to preserve the past, even in fragmentation. Through materiality and wearability, the piece transforms into both an artistic and existential inquiry, inviting the viewer to consider how memory—or its absence—shapes identity and embodiment.
